Nestlé spouses support Gawad Kalinga

The spouses of Nestlé Philippines, Inc. (NPI) top executives  recently visited the Gawad Kalinga (GK) Village in Bgy, San Isidro, Lipa City which is sponsored by the company, to gain first-hand insights for finalizing support programs which they will implement to serve various needs of the community.

The spouses led by Mrs. Ying Miller, wife of NPI Chairman and CEO Ying Miller, were met by GK Village President Jhay Juniosa, after which they interacted freely with residents whose homes they visited. An informal discussion was conducted on areas of involvement for Nestlé’s GK initiatives, while the company’s then Lipa factory HR Head Eden Sagisi and HR Employee Relations Specialist Rex Ferrer presented possible activities for execution after the formal “turnover” of the GK Village to the factory. The programs will seek to focus on livelihood, agriculture and environmental initiatives, consistent with Nestlé’s corporate strategy of Creating Shared Value.

The group, which was accompanied by Ms. Ruth Novales and Mr. David Laurel of Nestlé Corporate Affairs, will return to the GK village with concrete program proposals based on a comprehensive needs analysis with the assistance of the company’s Lipa factory HR team. Recently, village residents received bicycle-powered sidecars known as “padyaks” for livelihood purposes, build by sales force of Nestlé Philippines during its annual team-building exercise and turned over to Gawad Kalinga.

Nestlé Philippines Sales Sets New Guinness World Record

The sales force of Nestlé Philippines, Inc. set a new Guinness World Record by conducting the largest carpentry lesson, and in the process building 100 tables and 200 benches within 100 minutes for the benefit of Gawad Kalinga (GK) families. Guinness World Records Ltd. made it official by sending Nestlé Philippines the new world record certificate.

Composed of approximately 525, the Nestlé sales force was mobilized into teams of four to five, with each tasked to build a table and two benches, breaking the current Guinness World Record of 250 people in the world’s largest carpentry lesson category. The exercise was monitored by independent observers and safety personnel. The 100th table was completed with 18 minutes to spare.

The carpentry lesson and the building of tables and chairs officially kicked off the Company’s celebration of its 100th year in the country and were part of the team building program of the Sales Kick-Off event last January, organized by the Centennial Kick-Off Committee.

The tables and benches were built with their importance to Filipino family life in mind, the dining table being at the heart of the home where family members gather to share meals and exchange stories for the day. During the turnover ceremony of the tables and chairs, Chairman and CEO John Miller said that “We hope that, with this modest effort, we shall be able to help serve some of the needs of the GK families, especially those who are without tables and chairs.”

John, with National Sales Director Paolo Rodriguez, Corporate Affairs Head Edith de Leon, and Corporate Wellness Head Cora Sager, presented the tables and benches to GK founder Tony Meloto. Also handed over were “good wishes” messages to individual recipient families and 600 dinner plates inscribed with the Nestlé nutrition guide for moderation, variety and balance (MoVaBa) to encourage sound dietary habits, as part of the Company’s long-term advocacy of nutrition, health and wellness.

Nestlé Philippines sponsors GK Villages in Baseco in Manila’s Tondo district and Lipa City in Batangas. Its involvement in Gawad Kalinga is part of its efforts to Create Shared Value (CSV) to help improve lives.

CHUCKIE Adopts a School for GK Kids

Going in step with the Company’s CSV thrust, NESTLÉ CHUCKIE has turned its attention to the educational needs of children in the Gawad Kalinga Nestlé Village in Baseco, Tondo, converting an empty school building into a bright and cheery classroom for grade schoolers, furnishing it with books and toys, and sponsoring the school teachers.

Called Nestlé Sibol School, the CHUCKIE-sponsored classroom was inaugurated on June 19 with no less than Chairman and CEO John Miller cutting the inaugural ribbon with GK Executive Director Luis Oquiñena. Following an opening prayer led by MPED Head Ruth Novales, John delivered the welcome remarks expressing his delight at the creation of the school and reminding the GK kids about the importance of education to their future. In turn, the Sibol kids performed a dance number to show their appreciation and were promptly joined by their buddy CHUCKIE.

The inaugural program was also highlighted by the blessing of the school and its facilities by invited priest Fr. Rey. True to Filipino tradition, coins and candies were tossed to the air, which had the kids scrambling with delight to catch them.

Mr. Oquiñena closed the affair with a special message of thanks to Nestlé and to CHUCKIE, and wished everyone success in this endeavor. Snacks with CHUCKIE and NESTEA drinks were then served.

The Liquid Beverages Team of BEM Shahab Bachani, Children’s Segment Lead Jay Custodio, CHUCKIE CMM Kristy Tesoro, MPED Brand Specialist Casey Pichel and MPED Cluster Head Carlos Vergara together with the McCann CHUCKIE team were on hand to give their all-out support to the project. Also gracing the affair were Corporate Affairs Head Edith De Leon and Dave Laurel, who were part of the endeavor from the start.

With NESTLÉ CHUCKIE’s continuing support, the Nestlé Sibol School hopes to give GK kids a brighter future with fun learning, interaction, and adventure. CHUCKIE is happy to take an active part in planting the seeds of hope among these GK kids and helping fulfill their dreams.
