Nestlé: Transparent on commitments

Nestlé’s efforts to meet a series of commitments in areas where the company engages with society are detailed in a new report, Nestlé in Society 2013 (pdf, 3Mb).

The 35 pledges cover nutrition, water, rural development, sustainability and compliance.

Nestlé aims to fulfil all these commitments by 2020 or earlier. Ten are new this year and six are updated, based on feedback from stakeholders over the last 12 months.

The report underlines Nestlé’s fundamental belief that, for a company to be successful over the long term and create value for shareholders, it must also create value for society. The commitments show our determination to achieve this.

They include, for example, leading the industry in nutrition and health research, and providing nutritionally sound products designed for children.

Nestlé spouses support Gawad Kalinga

The spouses of Nestlé Philippines, Inc. (NPI) top executives  recently visited the Gawad Kalinga (GK) Village in Bgy, San Isidro, Lipa City which is sponsored by the company, to gain first-hand insights for finalizing support programs which they will implement to serve various needs of the community.

The spouses led by Mrs. Ying Miller, wife of NPI Chairman and CEO Ying Miller, were met by GK Village President Jhay Juniosa, after which they interacted freely with residents whose homes they visited. An informal discussion was conducted on areas of involvement for Nestlé’s GK initiatives, while the company’s then Lipa factory HR Head Eden Sagisi and HR Employee Relations Specialist Rex Ferrer presented possible activities for execution after the formal “turnover” of the GK Village to the factory. The programs will seek to focus on livelihood, agriculture and environmental initiatives, consistent with Nestlé’s corporate strategy of Creating Shared Value.

The group, which was accompanied by Ms. Ruth Novales and Mr. David Laurel of Nestlé Corporate Affairs, will return to the GK village with concrete program proposals based on a comprehensive needs analysis with the assistance of the company’s Lipa factory HR team. Recently, village residents received bicycle-powered sidecars known as “padyaks” for livelihood purposes, build by sales force of Nestlé Philippines during its annual team-building exercise and turned over to Gawad Kalinga.

Nestlé Partners with NGOs on CSV Initiatives

Exploring possible partnerships with NGOs to supplement existing CSV initiatives, Corporate Affairs invited Opportunity International Asia Pacific Regional Director Mark Daniels and APPEND CEO Virginia Juan to serve as resource speakers in the CSV Council Meeting held on May 21. Opportunity International and APPEND are organizations that specialize in helping the poorest of the poor start up their own businesses.

During this meeting, the CSV Council discussed the livelihood program initiatives of the Company as well as possible areas for collaboration with the two NGOs on issues regarding microfinance, micro-insurance, and community enterprise models.

“With this meeting, we have once more started an interesting discussion on possible partnerships with other stakeholders leading to CSV programs, which can have greater impact to society,” said Corporate Affairs Head Edith de Leon. This is in line with the thrust to “forge an era of collaboration” as mentioned by Chairman and CEO John Miller in the CSV Forum Philippines held on April 23.

The meeting was attended by Dave Laurel and Misha Rabat of Corporate Affairs; Menard Dacono, Jessie Dantes, and Bots Velez of ICD; Sunny Yu of Nestlé Professional; Art Baria of Technical; Rene Alvarado of SH&E; Kat Castro of Nestlé Nutrition; Gabby Posadas of CBD; and Aimee Ballesteros of Pulilan HR.

John and Campo Plant Coffee Seedlings in Tagum

Chairman and CEO John Miller, accompanied by Technical Director Campo van Beek, spent a day at the Nestlé Experimental and Demonstration Farm (NEDF) in Tagum City, Davao del Norte on May 29 to get a firsthand view of the farm operations and experience the joy of coffee planting.

Built in 1994 to serve as the hub of the Company’s agricultural research and training activities, the NEDF provides training for coffee farmers on the proper way of growing coffee. It also conducts experiments and produces coffee planting materials, which are made available to farmers at cost.

Nestlé Agri-Services Head Art Baria and his team welcomed John and Campo with a brief presentation on the NEDF operations in Tagum, showcasing the seven newly registered coffee selections under the Philippine Seedboard Act, the different ready-to-plant coffee seedlings, and the training programs it offers.

After visiting the new ‘mother’ plant garden where they were shown the different types of coffee planning materials, and the newly constructed propagation nurseries where the pricking of Robusta stem cuttings was demonstrated, John and Campo immediately went to work, planting coffee seedlings at the NEDF grounds. It was a day well spent, John later said of the visit.

“Planting coffee seedlings is a rewarding experience that will help you learn and appreciate even more about the work involved in producing coffee. Tagum is also central to creating shared value (CSV), for coffee farmers are our essential partners in the production of NESCAFÉ. The Company’s efforts to assist coffee farmers through the NEDF are aimed at helping to rejuvenate the coffee farming industry in the Philippines, encouraging more farmers to plant coffee and converting more lands to coffee farms.”

CHUCKIE Adopts a School for GK Kids

Going in step with the Company’s CSV thrust, NESTLÉ CHUCKIE has turned its attention to the educational needs of children in the Gawad Kalinga Nestlé Village in Baseco, Tondo, converting an empty school building into a bright and cheery classroom for grade schoolers, furnishing it with books and toys, and sponsoring the school teachers.

Called Nestlé Sibol School, the CHUCKIE-sponsored classroom was inaugurated on June 19 with no less than Chairman and CEO John Miller cutting the inaugural ribbon with GK Executive Director Luis Oquiñena. Following an opening prayer led by MPED Head Ruth Novales, John delivered the welcome remarks expressing his delight at the creation of the school and reminding the GK kids about the importance of education to their future. In turn, the Sibol kids performed a dance number to show their appreciation and were promptly joined by their buddy CHUCKIE.

The inaugural program was also highlighted by the blessing of the school and its facilities by invited priest Fr. Rey. True to Filipino tradition, coins and candies were tossed to the air, which had the kids scrambling with delight to catch them.

Mr. Oquiñena closed the affair with a special message of thanks to Nestlé and to CHUCKIE, and wished everyone success in this endeavor. Snacks with CHUCKIE and NESTEA drinks were then served.

The Liquid Beverages Team of BEM Shahab Bachani, Children’s Segment Lead Jay Custodio, CHUCKIE CMM Kristy Tesoro, MPED Brand Specialist Casey Pichel and MPED Cluster Head Carlos Vergara together with the McCann CHUCKIE team were on hand to give their all-out support to the project. Also gracing the affair were Corporate Affairs Head Edith De Leon and Dave Laurel, who were part of the endeavor from the start.

With NESTLÉ CHUCKIE’s continuing support, the Nestlé Sibol School hopes to give GK kids a brighter future with fun learning, interaction, and adventure. CHUCKIE is happy to take an active part in planting the seeds of hope among these GK kids and helping fulfill their dreams.
